Ata Bey is the Cosmic Matriarch from whom all life proceeds. She is at the same time Mother Earth, and Mother Nature in its nurturing manifestation. Her sacred animals are three. One is the boa constrictor snake called “Maha” who, legless, spends its intire lifetime hugging and caressing the Earth with its body, and who represents the “coa” pole or digging stick that the Tainos use to poke a hole in the ground and plant their crops. Another animal is the crocodile called “Kaiman” who represents the surface of the earth. The third animal is the Turtle who also represents the surface of the earth.
The fertile womb of Ata Bey is not only the source of all creation but also the dwelling place of the Dead it is the other world that Tainos know as Coa Bay, the underworld realm of the snake spirit
Ata Bey es la Madre Cosmica, de quien procede toda vida. Ella es al mismo tiempo la sagrada Madre Tierra, y Madre de la Naturaleza en su manifestacion mas materna y protectora. Los animales que la representan son tres. Una es la boa constrictora llamada el “Maja” quien carece de patas y se pasa la vida entera abrazando y acariciando la superficie de la Madre Tierra con su cuerpo, quien representa la “coa”, herramienta de palo de uso agricultural. Es ese el instrumento que los tainos usan para incar la tierra y abrir hollos para sembrar. Otro de los tres animales es el caiman, animal de la familia del cocodrilo quien representa la superficie de la tierra. El tercer animal es la tortuga marina, el carey, quien es otra manifestacion de la superficie terrestre.
El vientre fertil de Ata Bey no es solamente la fuente de donde procede toda la creacion, sino que al mismo tiempo es la morada de los difuntos. Es la zona subterranea que nosotros los tainos conocemos con el nombre “Coa Bay” el reino de la sagrada serpiente espiritual.
